A church is an autonomous (meaning self-governing) assembly of baptized believers, with officers and members, who gather for the purpose of glorifying God, winning the lost, and carrying out the ordinances of the Lord Jesus Christ. (see Matthew 28:19-20; 1 Corinthians 12;)

Actually, I did...well sorta had to tweek it a little but I fully intend to put to use what I got from Baptist D's.
I believe that vocation, authority and responsibilities are some factors which distinguishes the pastor(s) from deacons.
I am an Assistant Pastor, which means I help, among other things, oversee some of the ministries of the church. A deacon, while having almost identical qualifications is not in the position of an overseer.
Anyway, just a few thoughts on your question, thanks for asking.
A few good resources to consider:
1. The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (Orr)- excellent articles on Pastors, and also Deacons.
2. Check David Cloud's Apostasy Database under Church - He wrote a tremendous article entitled: "Deacons - Servants or Rulers."
